A man in a gray suit opened fire during rush hour in front of the Empire State Building in New York, killing one person and wounding nine others, police said.

The gunman was shot and killed by police, The New York Times reported.

The gunman shot and killed his former boss one day after being fired, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said. Bloomberg said nine other people were wounded by gunfire.

Some of those injured were taken to Bellevue Hospital, four of them in serious condition, while others were treated at the scene, WCBS, New York, reported.

"There are two people on site dead, a civilian and the gunman," a city official told the Times.

"I was sitting outside and I heard three shots first and I saw three people running up to Park Avenue way from the Empire State Building," a woman told WCBS-TV, New York. "Then we heard it again and it was like 10 to 15 shots at one time. Then we saw the whole block, like over 50 people running to Park Avenue."

Construction worker Chris Ogden told the New York Daily News the shooter was well dressed and after he shot and killed the one man, he "walked down the block, like nothing was happening, real casual. We were screaming from the top, 'It's the guy in the gray suit!'"

"I just asked one of the folks who was running by me what had happened and they said, 'Someone was shot.' Take a few more steps down the block and there was a deceased person on the sidewalk, apparently the victim of gunshots and lifeless and just lying there," former New York City Office of Emergency Management official Sid Dinsay told WCBS-AM, New York.

WINS, New York, reported witnesses flagged down police on routine patrol after the shooting erupted.

Police received an emergency call about a shooting at Fifth Avenue and 34th Street shortly after 9 a.m., WNBC, New York, reported.
