The Russian band Pussy Riot should not be
imprisoned, as their actions are protected by the right to free
speech, the media observer from the Organization for Security and
Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) said Friday in Vienna.
"Speech no matter how provocative, satirical or sensitive should
not be restricted or suppressed and under no circumstances should it
lead to imprisonment," said Dunja Mijatovic, the OSCE's
Representative on Freedom of the Media.
She said the two-year sentence against the three musicians was
part of a dangerous trend to curb free speech, along with recent
moves by Belarusian authorities to ban photos of a protest involving
teddy bears.
