AT&T announced Wednesday it is launching a national campaign to encourage people not to text and drive.

The wireless communications provider said it is urging people to make a pledge never to text and drive as part of its "It Can Wait" campaign. AT&T said people could go to www.itcanwait.com to take the pledge, then post about it on social media.

AT&T said it plans to spend "tens of millions of dollars" nationally on its campaign this year, including working with celebrities to make Public Service Announcements on TV, launching a social media campaign and working to provide a toolkit of no-texting-while-driving information to every high school in the country.

Although N.C. lawmakers banned texting and driving three years ago, it remains an ongoing problem. Citing a statistic from the National Safety Council1, AT&T North Carolina President Cynthia Marshall said automobiles crash more than 100,000 times a year and people are injured or die because the driver was texting while driving.
