Syrian Diplomat in London Quits Over Crackdown

July 30, 2012

Syria's most senior diplomat in Britain quit his post Monday, in protest over the "violent and oppressive regime" in Damascus, the Foreign Office in London said.

Charge d'Affaire Khaled al-Ayoubi told the British government he was no longer willing to represent Syria.

The British government said his decision represented the "revulsion and despair" of Syrians around the world.

"Mr al-Ayoubi has told us that he is no longer willing to represent a regime that has committed such violent and oppressive acts against its own people, and is therefore unable to continue in his position," a Foreign Office spokesman said.
