July 10, 2012
Pina colada

Pina Colada Day is today. The sweet, frothy, deceptively powerful drink, as the story goes, was first mixed by Ramon "Monchito" Marrero Perez at the San Juan Caribe Hilton Beachcomber in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 1954.

Don Q rum would like it pointed out that the rum used in the original concoction was their own.

The drink spread offshore with the help of Hunter S. Thompson's Puerto Rican drinking adventures in the "Rum Diaries," which was turned into a Johnny Depp vehicle starring Johnny Depp. The pina colada has been the official drink of Puerto Rico since 1978.

"Rum Diaries" wasn't the only film this year featuring Puerto Rico's liquid gold product. Mark Walhberg and his larger than life animated bear friend "Ted" got into Don Q's acclaimed Gold, Anejo and Gran Anejo rums, according to a Don Q news release.
