Steel Pier Opens With $21 Million Improvements; Hosts Thousands on Memorial Day
ATLANTIC CITY, NJ -- May 31, 2012 -- The New Steel Pier on the Atlantic City Boardwalk opened with record crowds over Memorial Day weekend. The 75,000 people who visited the Pier over the weekend were among the first to experience the new ride and restaurant facilities. Families gathered at the Steel Pier on the three-day weekend, including members of America's first family, Sasha and Malia Obama, who stopped by to enjoy the rides.
Steel Pier has been dubbed the most ambitious pier renovation in the world. The prestigious 3-year project, assisted by Governor Christie and the CRDA (Casino Reinvestment Development Authority), begins with this initial $21 million in improvements. Steel Pier strives to once again become "The Family Showplace of the Nation."
The Pier's renovation includes new rides, food and beverage outlets and an amphitheater, which will feature thrill shows all summer long.
"Visitors to the Pier will see a complete makeover," said Anthony Catanoso, President of Steel Pier Associates, LLC, which owns and operates the Pier. "Our goal is to attract more families and be a part of showcasing non-gaming attractions in Atlantic City."
Opened in 1898, the original Steel Pier was known as the "Showplace of the Nation" and "The World's Playground" during its heyday when visitors were entertained by the world's top entertainers and featured novelty acts such as the diving horse and the bike riding bear.
"We are in the midst of re-creating the excitement that once surrounded the Steel Pier," said Catanoso. "There are so many people who share a love of the Pier and unique memories. We are rebuilding the Pier with that in mind, adding modern improvements with a nod to our incredible history."
The Pier will be open weekends until June 15, and then will be open daily. For more information, visit www.steelpier.com or facebook.com/steelpier, or follow Steel Pier on Twitter at SteelPierAC.
