Take mom time traveling with a trip back in time at historic Fort Selden State Monument for a fun mother's day event. Mom can enjoy a period tea and a complimentary corsage and some fun regional history, appropriately, during this New Mexico State Centennial year.
"Last year, we had about 140 for the tea. Admission is free for all New Mexico residents, children under 17 and all mothers, regardless of where they come from. The tea begins at 10 a.m. Sunday and lasts until about 1 p.m., or until the tea runs out," said Nathan Stone, monument manager. While you're there, take time to stroll the grounds and see displays in the visitors' center that offers glimpses of frontier family life.
Get a glimpse into legendary figures who once lived in our territory, from the famed Buffalo Soldiers to the little boy who grew up to be Gen. Douglas MacArthur and imagine what life must have been like for moms of yesteryear. You'll find a family portrait there, featuring the general as a young boy, along with his mother, Mary Pinkney Hardy MacArthur, his dad, Gen. Arthur MacArthur, who was Fort Selden post commander in the late 1880s, and older brother Arthur III.
"Built on the banks of the Rio Grande in 1865, this adobe fort housed units of the U.S. Infantry and Cavalry. Their intent was to protect settlers and travelers in the Mesilla Valley from criminals and Apache Indians. Several of the units stationed at the fort were black troopers, referred to as Buffalo
Soldiers," according to the monument website, www.nmmonuments.org.
Fort Selden State Monument is 13 miles north of Las Cruces on Interstate 25, exit 19. Regular admission is $3 for visitors over 17, free for all New Mexico residents on Sundays, and free for kids under 17. For information, call (575) 526-8911 or (800) 429-9488, or visit www.nmmonuments.org.
