Stevia-Based Zero Calorie Sweetener Pulls Up to Cocktail Bar

Truvia, a stevia-based sweetener, today announced a new product that aims to take the plant-based, no-calorie sugar substitute further into the mainstream: Truvia 'Behind the Bar.' The product, intended to be mixed into a substitute for simple syrup by the bartender, is aimed at establishments that wish to serve low-calorie libations.

Truvia, which is made by Cargill, has been available since 2008 as a sugar substitute, though stevia has been used for more than 200 years. Truvia's formulation aims in mitigating some of the bitterness associated with prior versions of stevia sweeteners. While individuals can form their own opinions on how well the product succeeds, by this measure at least it's a smash: Truvia is the second-best-selling sugar substitute in the U.S., behind only Splenda.

Truvia is available in many products, as well as in packets or spoonable containers for personal use. Truvia 'Behind the Bar' is the latest innovation, following on the heels of 'Truvia Baking Blend' (a sugar/Truvia combo for use in baking). Truvia Behind the Bar is designed to be dissolved into 1/2 gallon of water, creating "Truvia simple syrup"--a zero calorie substitute for traditional simple syrup, ready to mix into margaritas, mojitos, or any other concoction favored by bar patrons.

As this product is initially slated for the food service industry, rather than home use, product pricing and availability information can be accessed via a company rep; contact form at the bottom of this Web page.
