Honda No Longer No. 1 at Consumer Reports

Honda has fallen from the top spot in Consumer Reports' automaker report cards, ending a four-year run in the coveted top spot.

Subaru is on top this year, followed in order by Mazda, Toyota, Honda and Nissan.

"Honda has really lost a lot of its edge," said Mike Quincy, automotive specialist. "They used to have cars that produce nice handling and nice interiors and gave you a lot for your money."

Chris Martin, a Honda spokesman, said the company is "delighted to be positioned near the top" of the rankings. "While Honda would always prefer to hold the top spot ... it's important to note that the top four automakers in this report card are ranked within three points of one another."

Chrysler remained in last place, although its score improved from last year.

"It's safe to say that a number of Chrysler's recent designs and effort to refresh its older products have been very successful," Quincy said.

The report cards cover 13 major automakers and 275 vehicles, rated on performance, comfort and reliability, the magazine said.

None of Honda's vehicles was named best in its segment. Consumer Reports had been critical of the redesigned Civic in August. Toyota had the most segment winners: five in the 10 segments rated.

Honda, which has assembly plants in Marysville and East Liberty, is the top-selling new-vehicle brand in the region and one of its largest employers.

In the past year, Honda began selling a redesigned version of the CR-V as well as the Civic. Its top seller, the Accord, will get a new design later this year.
