President Obama told German
Chancellor Angela Merkel Tuesday that he welcomed a deal reached on a
new bailout for Greece.
The leaders telephoned about the developments on the financial
situation in the eurozone, and Obama thanked Merkel for her
leadership, White House spokesman Jay Carney said.
They both welcomed the planned European Union fiscal pact, as well
as recent actions by the European Central Bank, Spain and Greece as
"positive steps in addressing the eurozone crisis," he said.
They discussed the Group of Eight (G8) summit set for Chicago in
May and agreed to focus on economic growth and jobs.
Separately, Carney said that while the agreement on Greece was an
important step, it "remains the case that additional steps should be
taken, and we encourage our European friends to take those steps."
