Ron Paul skipped his usual stump speech at a senior center in Las Vegas, Nev., yesterday, saying instead that Hispanics have been made "scapegoats" for the country's economic troubles, Politico reported.
The Libertarian contender for the Republican presidential candidacy pointed out that newcomers tend to get it in the shorts during hard times. The Jews were persecuted by the Nazis, he reminded his audience of about 100 Hispanics in East Las Vegas.
"I just do not believe that barbed-wire fences or guns on our border will solve any of our problems," he said.
The event was hosted by the nonpartisan Hispanics in Politics group. Paul was the only GOP candidate who showed up. He followed his appearance with a media event exclusively for the Spanish-language press, according to Politico.
Then he followed that with a Hispanic roundtable at his hotel.
About one-fourth of Nevada's 2.7 million people are Hispanic, according to the report.
