The payroll tax cuthas put lawmakers in a bind as they scratch their heads over where, oh where to get the money to pay for it. The measure, immensely popular among voters, is about to run out again, reports CNN. With four weeks to go, lawmakers have yet to figure out how to pay for it.
If they don't figure that out, they're likely to pay through the nose on Election Day. The tax holiday is very popular among the huge number of voters who don't get to take advantage of other tax breaks that don't seem to have any trouble getting paid for, like the one on capital gains.
Douglas Elmendorf, director of the Congressional Budget Office, believes extending the payroll tax holiday will cost $100 billion over 10 months. The measure will probably be tied to an extension of emergency federal unemployment benefits, CNN reported.
The payroll tax cut is worth about $1,000 a year to the average worker, according to the Associated Press.
