Billionaire polo magnate John Goodman has adopted his 42-year-old girlfriend as his daughter in what is seen as a legal move to shield his assets in an upcoming lawsuit.
Goodman is being sued by the family of a man killed in an auto accident in which Goodman ran a stop sign, the Palm Beach Post reported, citing a sheriff's report.
Goodman adopted Laruso Hutchins on Oct. 13 in Miami-Dade County, court documents show.
Because Hutchins is over 35, the move would give her and Goodman immediate access to a trust that Goodman set up for his children and that would not be considered part of Goodman's assets if he loses the lawsuit.
His lawyer says the adoption is meant to protect his children's financial future and has no connection to the lawsuit, USA Today reported.
USA Today also carried a CBS news video explaining the legal niceties.
CNN has video, too.
