Last week's deadly school shooting in Newtown, Conn., claimed the 6-year-old niece of Chapel Hill Police Attorney Matt Sullivan.
Young Catherine Hubbard was one of 20 Sandy Hook Elementary School students shot and killed by Adam Lanza, a troubled 20-year-old who also fatally shot his mother, Nancy Lanza, and six educators before turning one of the three guns he reportedly carried on himself.
Sullivan, speaking from Sandy Hook, Conn., a village in the Town of Newtown, said Catherine was the daughter of his sister Jennifer Hubbard, who attended St. Thomas More Catholic and Phillips Middle schools in Chapel Hill before moving north to attend high school.
He said a wake for his niece will be Wednesday from 4 p.m., to 7 p.m., at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. A funeral Mass for Catherine will be held Thursday at 10 a.m., also at St. Rose of Lima, which was the site of a bomb threat Sunday that interrupted a heavily attended Mass.
Two of the 20 children killed were buried Monday by the grief-stricken community, with more scheduled today and later this week.
Sullivan declined to discuss the shooting in detail.
He did, however, share a statement released by his sister and her husband, Matthew Hubbard, saying he would prefer to allow the parents to speak through their statement.
"We are greatly saddened by the loss of our beautiful daughter, Catherine Violet and our thoughts and prayers are with the other families who have been affected by this tragedy," Jennifer and Matthew Hubbard said in the statement.
The couple also expressed appreciation for the support the community has given the family and gratitude to emergency responders, teachers and staff of Sandy Hook Elementary School as well and law enforcement and fire officials.
"We have no further statement to make at this time and ask that we be afforded the opportunity to grieve with our friends and family," the Hubbards said. "We ask that you continue to pray for us and the other families who have experienced loss in this tragedy."
The family has asked that donations be sent to Newtown Animal Center, P.O., Box 475, Newtown, CT 06470.
