OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 12/14/12 -- The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada made the following statement in regards to today's Supreme Court of Canada ruling in the terrorism-related cases of Khawaja, Sriskandarajah and Nadarajah:
"Our Government is committed to keeping our streets and communities safe by fighting terrorism.
"I am pleased that, with today's ruling, the Supreme Court of Canada has upheld the constitutionality of key anti-terrorism provisions in the Criminal Code and a life sentence for convicted terrorist Mohammad Momin Khawaja. By upholding this sentence, the court sent a strong message that terrorism will not be treated leniently in Canada.
"I am also pleased that the court has recognized that the principles of procedural fairness were appropriately respected in the extradition cases of Mssrs. Sriskandarajah and Nadarajah and that their surrender for extradition was justified.
"Canada is not immune to the threat of terrorism. Our Government will continue to work with its domestic and international partners to actively combat this threat at home and abroad."
