In the slot machine of life, all three numbers on the calendar come up big today for Maxwel Reede.
The Aberdeen sixth-grader turns 12 today, on the 12th day of the 12th month of the 12th year.
To celebrate the occasion, one heck of a party will be thrown today by his family in the gym at the Primrose Home Office. All of his fellow sixth-graders from Roncalli Elementary are invited. The bash, which includes inflatables, runs from 4:30 to 6:15 p.m.
A golden birthday occurs when a person turns the same age as his birthdate. Because Maxwel hits a deluxe jackpot today, the term "gold" might not even apply.
"I prefer diamond," he said with a smirk on his face.
But the party will still have a gold theme. The cookies will have gold frosting, in addition to bearing the number "12." All the decorations will be gold. Partygoers will be furnished with gold chocolate coins.
All day today, Maxwel will be the center of attention.
"He's the second-born. He needs it," said his mother, Jackie.
She and Nathan Reede have four kids. Max's two brothers are Augustin, 13, and Harrison, 9. His sister is Reagan, 10.
The family is glad that Max's grandfather, Tom Guhin, will be at the party.
"Especially for cleanup," Jackie said. "Just kidding."
Maxwel, born Dec. 12, 2000, in Aberdeen, is a bright kid. He saw today coming a long time ago. In about the second grade, he figured out that Dec. 12, 2012, would be a special day for him.
So the family responded with a party.
"It's a great way to celebrate Maxwel's life," Jackie said.
Maxwel has a lot of fans.
"He's one cool dude," said grandfather Guhin. "Max is a quick-witted young man that will do just fine in life."
"Max is a gentle, loving, funny, creative kid," Jackie said.
Reagan, a fifth-grader, said her brother is creative and nice. "He has a really big imagination," she said.
In addition to the date, there is another 12 in this story: Tom and Margaret Guhin have 12 grandchildren.
Maxwel's other grandparents are Patty Reede-Couser and the late Neil Reede.
Jackie and Nathan Reede will make sure that all four of their kids will get one extra-special birthday party. In May, Augustin's 13th birthday was celebrated outdoors with inflatables.
Maxwel's celebration won't end when the calendar turns to another day. The Reede family will have a party just for the family on Sunday.
