Cyber Monday lived up to its reputation as the biggest online spending day of the year, with sales up 30.3 percent from last year, according to a report Tuesday from IBM Digital Analytics Benchmark.
Consumers buying via smartphones and tablets fueled that boost, arguably the most significant trend of the 7-year-old Cyber Monday phenomenon. Shoppers using Apple's iPads led the way, followed by those on iPhones and Android smartphones, according to the IBM report.
At Aliso Viejo-based online store Rakuten Buy.com, mobile spending increased by 108 percent from 2011, said Bernard Luthi, chief operating officer.
"We experienced some really interesting and positive trends this year, with more of our customers shopping earlier and virtually 'standing in line' to shop the first hour our virtual doors opened," Luthi said.
"Overall, we experienced a 47 percent increase in average shopping cart spending and results exceeded our expectations. It was also clear that online shoppers weren't just browsing for deals as the conversion of clicks to purchases were also considerably up on the last holiday weekend."
The rise of mobile buying rang true at Pricegrabber.com, said Rojeh Avanesian, vice president of the online comparison shopping site.
"About 30 percent of our total traffic was generated through mobile phones and tablets -- and that is up significantly from last year by more than 3,000 percent," Avanesian said. In contrast, traffic from desktops and laptops dropped 8.7 percent.
People shopped much less on the job, he said, instead using mobile devices before and after work hours.
