Climate Change Threat to Pandas' Food

Nov 16, 2012

Giant pandas could be left hungry and struggling to survive by global warming, scientists warn.

A study predicts climate change will wipe out much of the bamboo on which the animals rely for food.

Prime panda habitat in China could be wiped out by the end of the century, say the researchers.

"We will need pro-active actions to protect current giant panda habitats," said Dr Mao-Ning Tuanmu, from Yale University.

"We need time to look at areas that might become panda habitat in the future, and to think about maintaining connectivity of areas of good panda habitat and habitat for other species."
