TAMARAC, FL -- (Marketwire) -- 11/14/12 -- As the winter holiday season approaches, anticipation builds for Thanksgiving feasts, family get-togethers and festive parties. But, for PuroClean property damage restoration experts, there is a different, and much less pleasant, sort of anticipation. These professionals know that the holidays bring an increased risk of home structure fires -- many of them involving cooking, Christmas trees, holiday decorations and candles -- and that they may be called in to help a homeowner deal with the tragic aftermath of a holiday fire.
"Each time our PuroClean teams are called to help a family restore their home and bring their lives back to 'normal' after a fire, they think about the small steps that might have been taken to prevent that fire from starting," said Steve Leger, executive vice president of operations for PuroClean. "Most of those preventive actions are really just common sense -- but it's easy to lose track of them in the hectic days around a holiday."
As the holidays approach, PuroClean offers the following reminders from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to help homeowners keep safety a priority as holiday celebrations ramp up:
Thanksgiving Cooking Safety
Fact: The NFPA discourages the use of outdoor gas-fueled turkey fryers that immerse the turkey in hot oil. According to the NFPA, the use of turkey fryers by consumers can lead to devastating burns, other injuries and the destruction of property.
•Consider purchasing your fried turkey from a grocery store, specialty food retailer or restaurant. •Investigate new outdoor turkey cooking appliances that do not use oil. Check to see that they carry a label from a recognized testing laboratory •For all the turkey "go-withs," remember that most cooking fires start at the stovetop.
Fact: December is the peak month for home candle fires. More than half of all candle fires start because the candle was placed too close to something that could catch fire.
•Use "flameless" candles whenever possible. Today's choices look and smell like "real" candles. •Don't leave children alone in a room with a burning candle. •Don't burn candles in rooms where people may fall asleep -- like bedrooms. Two of five U.S. candle fires begin in the bedroom.
"Prevention is the best and most effective way to help control fire risk during the holidays and every day. But, if a fire does break out, the most important thing to focus on is saving lives," said Leger. "If a fire breaks out during a party, it's always safest to leave and call in the professionals. But if you do try to fight the fire yourself, make sure that others are getting out and that you have access to an exit."
PuroClean professionals are on call 24 hours a day, even on holidays. "Calling in a restoration professional as soon as possible after a fire can help you minimize claims for fire and smoke damage to property and possessions," says Leger.
