The resignation of CIA Director David Petraeus will not have much impact on Senate hearings on the Libyan consulate attack, a ranking committee member said.

Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., said on ABC's "This Week" the interim agency Director Mike Morrell, was well versed in what happened in Benghazi and was already scheduled to testify Thursday before the Senate Intelligence Committee.

"That's fine, because he certainly was there when all of the decisions for made relative to Benghazi," said Chambliss, the vice chairman of the committee. "But at the end of the day, I would not rule out Gen. Petraeus being called to testify. That still could happen at some point in time."

The Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the Benghazi consulate left four Americans dead, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens. Confusion in Washington over who in the Obama administration knew what and when stoked the partisan fires in this fall's U.S. presidential campaign.

The role the CIA and other intelligence agencies played in assessing the situation in Libya and informing the White House continues to be uncertain.

Chambliss had kind words for Petraeus but called his resignation in the wake of the revelation of an affair he was having "the right thing" to do.
