Storm advisories were posted along Baja California, Mexico, Monday as Hurricane Paul headed toward Clarion Island off the Mexican coast, forecasters said.

Paul, a Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 90 mph, was about 455 miles southwest of the southern tip of Baja California, moving north-northeast at 13 mph, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said in its 2 p.m. EDT advisory.

A tropical storm warning was in effect for Mexico's Baja Peninsula from Santa Fe north to Puerto San Andresito.

A tropical storm watch was posted from Puerto San Andresito to El Pocito.

Paul was expected to shift to the north Tuesday and lose some of its forward speed before turning toward the north-northeast on Wednesday, forecasters said.

On its forecast tract, the center was expected to approach the west coast of the southern Baja Peninsula late Tuesday and the central area of the peninsula by Wednesday.

Paul was expected to gain some strength Monday and begin to weaken Tuesday.

Hurricane-force winds extended outward from center up to 35 miles and tropical storm-force winds extended outward up to 105 miles.

Paul was expected to produce 2-4 inches of rain over the southern Baja Peninsula, with up to 8 inches possible.

Dangerous swells generated by Paul were expected to affect the south and west coasts of Baja California Monday night.
