Volkswagen showcased at the Detroit Motor Show an
electric zero-emission concept version of the New Beetle with flush
windows, low roof and 20-inch wheels.
The two-seat speedster draws its power from a lithium-ion battery.
The 80 kg light electric motor with a power output of 85 kW enables a
minimum driving range of 180 kilometers, according to the carmaker.
In addition, the E-Bugster has a brake recovery system. As soon as
the driver's foot leaves the accelerator pedal or brakes, the car's
kinetic energy is converted to electricity, which is stored in the
battery, extending the range.
At the same show the carmaker also presented a Jetta Hybrid
powered by a high-tech petrol engine and a zero-emission electric
motor. Propulsion is handled by a combination of a four-cylinder 1.4
TSI (110 kW / 150 PS), a 7-speed Direct Shift Gearbox and a 20 kW
electric motor.
