Gov. Rick Perry announced he is dropping out of the presidential race and will endorse Newt Gingrich.

"I believe Newt is a conservative visionary who can transform our country. We've had our differences, which campaigns will inevitably have, and Newt is not perfect, but who among us is?" Perry said in Charleston, S.C., reports CNN.com.

Newt Gingrich is on a roll collecting endorsements. Another fellow conservative, Sarah Palin, also threw her support toward the former House speaker.

The
Team Rick Perry Twitter account quoted some of the things the Texas governor said today. Here are some highlights:

this campaign has never been about the candidates...

I ran for President because I love America, our people and our freedom. But the mission is greater than any one man.

today I am suspending my campaign and endorsing Newt Gingrich for president of the United States

as someone who has always admired a great Texas governor ... Sam Houston ... I know when it is time for a 'strategic retreat.'

And this I know, I am not done fighting for the cause of conservatism ... In fact I have only begun to fight.
