Ex-presidential candidate John Edwards will undergo surgery in February to address a life-threatening condition, according to Associated Press.
A federal judge says she has two letters from a cardiologist regarding the 58-year-old former North Carolina senator, according to AP.com.
The news came during a hearing Friday to consider whether Edwards would go on trial later this month for alleged campaign finance violations.
On June 3, 2011, Edwards was indicted by a North Carolina grand jury on six felony charges, including four counts of collecting illegal campaign contributions, one count of conspiracy and one count of making false statements. If convicted, Edwards faces up to 30 years in prison and a $1.5 million fine.
The judge delayed the trial to March 26, reports AP.
Edwards was in the news as of late for cheating on his wife, Elizabeth, and fathering a child with his mistress.
In January 2010, Elizabeth legally separated from him and intended to file for divorce after a mandatory one-year waiting period.
Elizabeth died of metastatic breast cancer on Dec. 7, 2012.
