Singer Shakira has been chosen as 2011 Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year.
The seven-time Latin Grammy winner, two-time Grammy winner will be honored at the 12th annual Tribute Gala to be held on Nov. 9 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas.
Shakira also is nominated for three Latin Grammy's, including for Album of the Year ("Sale el Sol").
The Colombian singer is not only being honored for her music, the Latin Recording Academy also is recognizing her philanthropic contributions.
A portion of proceeds from the Nov. 9 gala will go to the singer's Pies Descalzos Foundation as well as The Latin Recording Academy's Latin Grammy in the Schools educational efforts, according to a press release.
Shakira said the award is "truly an honor."
Other artists who have received this distinction include Placido Domingo, Carlos Santana Gloria Estefan, Gilberto Gil, Julio Iglesias and Ricky Martin.
