Shakira Gets Hollywood Star -- First for a Colombian Star

Nov. 8, 2011
Shakira

Colombian pop idol Shakira was awarded a star Tuesday on Hollywood's Walk of Fame, becoming the first Colombian personality ever to grace the world-famous sidewalk.

Shakira, 34, was cheered on by hundreds of fans at the site just a day before she was due to accept another award as the Latin Grammy's person of the year. Just 3 percent of the 2,345 entertainers honored on the Walk of Fame are of Latin heritage, including Gloria Estefan, Andy Garcia and Enrique Iglesias.

The global superstar rose to fame with her 1998 album Donde Estan los Ladrones, which sold more than 7 million copies worldwide. She won her first Grammy in 2001 when her MTV Unplugged was named best Latin pop album.

Her first English-language album, Laundry Service, sold more than 13 million copies, while her 2005 single Hips Don't Lie was one of the best-selling albums of the decade. Her single Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) was the official song of the 2010 World Cup.

Shakira has also been deeply involved in philanthropy with her Pies Descalzos (Barefoot) Foundation supporting education for poor children in her homeland and as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
