Wyclef Jean, one-third of the Fugees, is defending his charity Yele Haiti Foundation after allegations that money raised did not fully go to its intended efforts.
Wyclef Jean, 42, was born and raised in Haiti and moved to the United States with his family when he was 9 years old.
The singer founded Yele Haiti in 2005. In its first year of operation, the foundation provided scholarships to 3,600 children, after the devastation by Hurricane Jeanne.
Following another natural disaster -- the earthquake that struck the island on Jan. 12, 2010 -- Wyclef Jean called on others to donate to his foundation's "Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund."
There are allegations that Yele Haiti Foundation donated less than a third of the $16 million it collected on behalf of Haitian relief efforts, according to Billboard.com.
On Nov. 27, The New York Post reported that $1 million was paid to a Florida firm that "doesn't seem to exist."
