Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow once again mustered his last-minute magic, leading Denver (5-5) to a 17-13 victory against the New York Jets (5-5) on Thursday by running for a 20-yard touchdown with 58 seconds left in the game.
The comeback continued Tebow's streak of reversing the Broncos' fortunes late in games. He is now 4-1 as Denver's starter this season.
"Those guys believe in me and stuck with me for 60 minutes. and we just kept fighting and found a way at the end," Tebow, who finished with 104 yards passing and 68 yards passing.
Broncos coach John Fox said, "He's just a competitive dude. He's super-competitive. He never lays his sword down. He's going to fight you to the death."
The winning drive, which began at the Broncos' 5-yard line with less than six minutes left, was Denver's only sustained drive of the game.
Until that point, Tebow was off the mark and off his vaunted running game. He had 11 yards rushing and 69 yards on 6-for-15 passing entering into the fourth quarter.
But Broncos fans are learning that when time and hope are running out, it's Tebow time.
"I trust him. I trust him with everything; no matter how many interceptions he throws, how many touchdowns he throws, that's Tim Tebow," said Broncos rookie linebacker Von Miller, who had a key sack of quarterback Mark Sanchez on the Jets' final drive. "I'm around with him till the end. I hope he silenced a lot of critics today."
He earned the starting job by leading the Broncos to 16 fourth-quarter points in an Oct. 9 loss to the San Diego Chargers. The rally fell short only on the game's last play, when the Chargers knocked down a would-be touchdown pass.
In his first start, he willed the Broncos to a 18-15 overtime win vs. the Miami Dolphins. Last Sunday, he threw a 56-yard, fourth-quarter scoring strike to Eric Decker to lift the Broncos past the Kansas City Chiefs.
His legacy grew Thursday as a last-second scoring pass attempt by Sanchez fell incomplete as time ran out. The loss extended the Jets' misery and hurt their playoff hopes. They lost 37-16 to the New England Patriots on Sunday.
"We played a great game but gave up the big play at the end," Jets coach Rex Ryan said. "This one stings, there's no question."
