Nissan has leaked photos of its 2012 GT-R, the company's uber-sports coupe designed to take on the best that Porsche, Ferrari and Lamborgini have to offer, and arguably the most high-tech roadburner ever when it is released, probably in the summer of 2011.
The GT-R takes a page from Audi's styling book by incorporating LED running lights in the front of the car, combined with standard LED brake/tail lights.
Sleeker bodywork hint at increased downforce. That, combined with low-profile 20-inch wheels, seem set to provide extreme road-holding on par with any sportscar in the world.
The auto blogosphere is in top gear on the engineering specifics for the GT-R, with rumors of heavily bolstered strut towers to stiffen the chassis for less flex and a more rigid ride when cornering at the limit. There are also rumors of increased horsepower over the 2011, which is already rated at a stout 485 horsepower--good enough to fire the car to 60 mph in four seconds or less.
Blogging insider also claim that drivers can select either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive for the GT-R.
How many of the rumors are true, and how many are based on blog-vapor? Stay tuned. It's bound to be a wild ride.
In the meantime, here are some performance specs for the 2011 car, just to whet your appetite:
Engine: 3.8-liter V6, turbocharged
Output: 485 horsepower at 6400 rpm; 434 lb-ft
Curb weight: 3,800 lbs. (1,700 kilos)
Top speed: 193 mph
Zero-60 mph: 3.2 seconds (with launch control engaged); 3.8 seconds (without LC)
