President Obama has donated his $1.4 million award for the Nobel Peace Prize to charity groups that will house family members of injured veterans, promote girls education in Pakistan and bring relief to Haiti, among other causes.
Six of the 10 groups that received donations promote higher education for disadvantaged students.
Among the recipients:
* Fisher House, an organization funding the construction of family lodging facilities near military hospitals. ($250,000)
* College Summit, national nonprofit organization that partners with schools and districts to strengthen college-going culture and increase college enrollment rates. ($125,000)
* Central Asia Institute, a non-profit organization, co-founded by Greg Mortenson and Jean Hoerni, whose mission is to promote and provide community-based education and literacy programs, especially for girls, in remote regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan. ($100,000)
* Clinton Bush Haiti Fund is a charity organization formed on January 16, 2010, by former U.S. Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, to aid the victims of the 2010 Haitian earthquake. ($200,000)
* American Indian College Fund is an organization that helps Native American students, providing them with support through scholarships and funding toward higher education. ($125,000)
