American Idol's Adam Lambert Dominates Idol's Great Performances (Exclusive)

Feb. 6, 2010

By Joshua Molina, HispanicBusiness.com

With American Idol fully back in swing and the hit show expected to dominate network television for the next four months, it is a good time to reflect on American Idol's greatest performances. Each season has produced some amazing performances and 2010 is likely to do the same. Here's Idols' Top 13 performances, which of course, feature three from Adam Lambert.

13. Tracks of My Tears, Adam Lambert. This made Smokey Robinson rise to his feet and give a standing ovation

12. Alone, Carrie Underwood. Brilliant, beautiful and the 80s hairspray rocked.

11. Heartless, Kris Allen. Just when you thought the shy Allen was out of the competition he rebounded with a game-changing guitar-laced masterpiece of the Kanye West song. He likely won the show based off this performance.

10. In the Ghetto, Taylor Hicks. Yes, Taylor Hicks is by far the least dynamic of all the American Idol winners, but his performance of arguably Elvis' greatest song was moving.

9. Respect, Kelly Clarkson. The first idol (and best?) Idol winner helped make this show a hit for seasons to come. So easy to root for with her unpretentious manner, Clarkson showed Aretha and the world she has soul.

8. Superstar, Ruben Studdard. Ruuuben, was a bit boring and predictable, but his voice was flawless and his version of the Carpenters classic blew away the competition in Season 2.

7. Hallelujah, Jason Castro. This song was so powerful and moving, had Castro not followed it up with a disastrous "I Shot the Sheriff," he may very well have won instead of David Cook.

6. A Change is Gonna Come, Adam Lambert. The chameleon Lambert distinguished himself as the master of the Idol stage with his chilling version of the Sam Cooke song. Lambert's voice shines here and this was one of his best (of many) moments while on stage.(Updated: Great video quality here, thanks to a reader).
5. You Give Love a Bad Name, Blake Lewis. Before Adam Lambert, Blake Lewis was breaking the rules on Idol. His beat-boxing performance of the Bon Jovi classic was a show-stopper, and proved that an Idol contestant can bring originality to a classic.

4. Billie Jean, David Cook. Cook consistently delivered breakthrough performances. This was his best.

3. Imagine, David Archuleta. John Lennon would have been proud.

2. Summertime, Fantasia Barrino. From Porgy & Bess, Fantasia, on her knees, gave an iconic performance.

1. Mad World, Adam Lambert. Brilliant, chilling, moving, Lambert raised the bar higher than anyone with this skillful take on the Tears For Fears classic.

no Chris Daughtry ? his performance of Fuel's Hemorrhage was one of the best performances IDOL has seen, also Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman. Adam rightfully dominates the list.

I agree with Charles, Taylor Hicks has been a whipping post on the internet, what a shame, because he did have the best season on Idol, I voted, voted and voted for him. Of course that season was the greatest, because the entire top ten were exceptional. Look at all the talent that came from season 5,Chris Daughtry, Elliott Yamine, Kat Mcphee, Mandisa, Kelly Pickler, Bucky Covington, Ace Young, Paris and Lisa. I still watch, but have not voted since then. I wish them all luck, and someday I hope to see Taylor appreciated for what he is, a great entertainer, and a real nice person. Please all you internet writers, learn more about a person before you put them down on these articles

Thank you for the nod to Kris Allen. I agree. His rendition of Heartless greatly influenced the outcome. Until I became interested in AI this last season, I never believed the allegations that American media was controlled by liberals with their own agenda. Now, I do. Kris is in Asia, headlining concerts, drawing crowds of an est. 20,000, knocking them dead and the AI media here are completely ignoring him. Headlines still are about Lambert - he's going on vacation with the guy he kissed on the AMAs, his "great performances," etc. What causes me to air my opinion on this site is because of this author. I would think that a reporter for Hispanic interests would want to combat prejudice in any form. I suppose, however, it's always easier to recognize prejudice in others than in ourselves.

In reality Adam could have been the top 13...so it was kind of you to give a nod to other years. Adam Lambert put on a show every week and kept everyone guessing just how he was going to top it...and he always did. The others just looked so amateurish next to Adam...he is on the level of where Kelly and Carrie are now.

Hallelujah by Jason Castro also his Day Daydreaming Boy, outstanding.

While I do believe that Adam Lambert is the greatest Idol contestant ever (and Whole Lotta Love deserves to be on this list!) I miss the highly underrated Bo Bice - an absolutely amazing rock/blues singer, his acapella version of "In a Dream" was pure, simple, heartfelt and truly beautiful. He helped open the door for all other original performers who stay true to who they are.

Adam Lamert was the best singer/entertainer to come out of AI. There will be no other contestat like Adam to come from anywhere ever. I will watch AI this year but this might be the last one, only to see if anybody comes even close to Adam but I seriously doubt that. This might be the end for American Idol, no wonder Simon is leaving AI.

I forgot to add Adam Lambert has been over-lavished in your review. There were many outstanding performances other than Lambert. At this time, there seems to be an Adam Lambert "fever" because of his over-the-top public performances. True, he gave some outstanding performances on AI, but your fixation on this ONE singer is a tad overdone.

Why, why, why do so many blog writers/critics dump on Taylor Hicks???? I know Taylor Hicks is one of the very best to win on AI, and held the American audience and those around the world in the palm of his hands during his performances on AI. In my opinion, he was the most consistently entertaining and dynamic performer AI has ever had!! Give the man a break!!! If you have followed his career, you will find he is a totally dynamic performer/singer.

My favorite performance was "Imagine" by David Archuleta. From the day David sang that song, I have been an avid fan! Love him!!

First to Charles about Taylor Hicks. I'm from Alabama, born and raised and I voted for Ruben and Bo and Taylor and I love Taylor but just like all of the other Idols they all pale in comparison to Adam. His vocal talent alone is completely remarkable but he took all the Idols of all seasons to school with his ability to totally entertain and evoke emotion from his audience. His song choices were impeccable and the way he built a show around every performance was sheer genius and the sign of a true performance artist who can sing his face off! I also agree with everyone else that 'Whole Lotta Love', 'If I Can't Have You' and 'Born to be Wild' belong on the list. I'm glad to see Blake Lewis make the list because his performance of 'You Give Love a Bad Name' was ground-breaking.

I agree with Charles' post above. Taylor Hicks is an extremely talented and dynamic singer and musician who has been much maligned in the media only because he was not who Idol wanted to win that season. But his live performances on Idol were outstanding. For me, to date only Taylor Hicks, Kris Allen, Adam Lambert, and Jennifer Hudson are the idol contestants who got "inside" the music when they performed.

Very nice list of some great performances, maybe a little heavy on Adam Lambert. He is very talented but so is Allison Iraheta. My fav- David Archuleta. He did "Contigo En La Distancia" at the ALMA awards and it was BEAUTIFUL! I am looking forward to much more from this very talented, gracious and giving young man. He is all about using what God gave him for the good. David es lo maximo!

@charles, I have to agree with you that Taylor was great on Idol, but the people who voted for him didn't continually follow after the finale. He was a terrific performer, always had the audience dancing, but the fandom ended when the finale did I have to disagree with your comments about Adam. He didn't just scream through his songs. He was amazing, and still is. Adam not only was best performer on AI, he also sett a mood for each performance. The list of the greatest performances on AI should have included every performance Adam gave on Idol. "Born To Be Wild", "Whole Lotta Love," Feeling Good," and "Black Or White", in addition to "A Change Is Gonna Come," and "Mad World." I'm pretty sure Adam has raised the bar for all the future performers on AI, especially those on AI9.

Obviously the writer of this piece is a huge Adam Lambert fan. It is obvious by all of the mentions of adam not only in this article but the little articles listed on the right side. Everyone except for the one about Fantasia is about Adam. David sang a lot more awesome performances than just Billie Jean. I mean "Hello", phantom of the opera's "Music of the nIGHT" ETc. there were many more. Plus Carrie Underwood had a lot so did Daughtry, Bo Bice etc. I am not a Adam Lambert fan at all. I am not saying he can't sing because he can but he is so obnoxious and dramatic. I am very glad he didn't win American Idol. I like Chris allen but Danny Gokey did a great job.

First of all, let me say that the post was well-written. The writer hit the mark on the chosen performances. Of course Adam Lambert fans would probably want the whole list to contain Adam Lambert's performance on AI, just because as fans we were in awe of how he commanded the stage and his unique take on every song he performed. Love or hate his voice, I do think we can't deny that he took risks. No one can argue that AI is a Karaoke competition when Adam performed. I don't think Karaoke singing consists of amazingly belting out Black or White, Whole Lotta Love or Born to be Wild like he did.

Hi...after reading all the comments...maybe you should consider putting ALL of Adam Lambert song on...Adam ruined Season 9 as far as I am concern...it is not the same and boring without him. I love his high and low range and this man has some pipes on him...He is God Given. Thanks!

Charles, you didn't watch AI when Adam sang Mad World, did you? No screams, it was the most incredible, soft and controlled voice ever.

I loved Adam Lambert's 'Mad World' and several songs by others across the years, but my favorite Idol by far is David Archuleta. No screaming or antics needed to get attention, just an out-of-this-world, crazy good, soulful, emotive voice. Plus, how endearing and gorgeous can a guy be? David was several years younger than Adam when he was on Idol and had far less experience performing. What a difference the past two years have made! You wouldn't believe how he's overcome the shyness and blossomed on stage. David Archuleta is one Idol we're gonna be listening to for DECADES, folks. You can bet the farm on that one.

Sorry, but I just wanted to point out that the first two rockers to bring the house down and sing on pitch were Bo Bice performing an outrageous "Wipping Post" and Constantine Maroulis reviving "Bohemian Rhapsody" with total authenticity. From everyone's comments, it is clear that American Idol has been able to entertain, inspire and delight so many viewers with these incredibly talented singers. Even contestants that didn't make the top twelve, such as, Ricky Braddy, were amazing. I still say to all: Come for Simon but stay for the talent!

How soon we forget, during Hollywood week, Justin Guarini brought the house to it's feet with "Get Here" and secured the spot as the one to beat according to Entertainment Weekly and other newspapers. Kelly took everyone's breath away with her Big Band performance of "Stuff Like That There". After that week there was no doubt who the winner would be. I know he is polarizing but Clay Aiken's haunting "Solitaire" left Neil Sedaka relinquishing the tune to Clay. He went on to stun and inspire with "This Is The Night" and even more importantly, "Bridge Over Troubled Water". Clay was the Adam Lambert of Season 2 but has spiraled downward in popularity. Another surprising performance came from Katherine McPhee singing "Black horse and the Cherry Tree" on her knees, no less.

I am a HUGE Adam fan but Bo Bice's A cappella rendition of "In a Dream" was fabulous!

Isn't this really just a matter of opinion. Because, I would put David Cook right at the top with Billie Jean. No performance by any other idol has ever come close to David Cook's rendition of Billie Jean and by the way, I am a hard core Kris Allen fan.

You forgot the Best Performance of All Times on Idol: Adam Lambert;s "A Whole Lotta Love." Nobody but Adam could perform the greatest Rock song of all times and do it better than the original. He owns this song.

What a great list you put together! I heartily agree with most of them, especially Adam's. I predict he will be around a long time...Despite what I think was a misjudgement at the AMA's, he is rebounding quite well. I think he is a delightful person and the most exciting singer and performer in a very long time... I enjoy your site and articles. Thanks!

I agree with the posters who think that Adam's performances of Whole Lotta Love and Ring of Fire belong in this list. Frankly, just about everything he did could be put there! I would replace Carrie Underwood with Jennifer Hudson's Circle of Life, and Ruben's Superstar with David Cook's Hello. Oh, and most definitely add Kelly's Stuff Like That There.

I think Taylor Hicks was and still is the best performer to come from AI. Trouble and Something are even better than In The Ghetto. That is why his finale and the show before it have to this day the highest ratings of any show of the decade. American Idol and otherwise. And it is why the summer tour of that year was the most attended summer tour of any. I have seen and heard all the screams and applause for Taylor. There are reasons why Idol decided to not support him. Adam a little too over the top and screams to much for my taste. But whatever floats your boat.

Thank you for recognizing Adam's outstanding contributions to American Idol. Sometimes I feel that he doesn't get the recognition that he deserved for absolutely entertaining us each and every week. His album has kept the journey going. Love American Idol for finding this talented guy.

Holy Smokes, I forgot to add Whole Lotta Love by Adam Lambert- he outsang the great Robert Plant on that song. I love Plant, but I listened to his and then Adam's versions on youtube, back to back and Adam's singing has more resonance and wider range scale. You know what, Adam singing 'Born to Be Wild" and dancing around on stage, vigorously, ans still in complete control of his note, totally floored me. I can't even jog and talk withiout getting out of breath. That was a remarkable performance.

Great Choices, Joshua, I second that. Here are some other wonderful performances on AI, Joshua, put them in your own order for songs number Eleven to Twenty: Feeling Good - Adam Lambert Ring Of Fire - Adam Lambert Papa Was A Rolling Stone - Allison Iraheta Hello - David Cook Travelin Man - Jason Castro I Don't Want To Miss A Thing - David Cook Falling Slowly - Kris Allen Jesus Take Teh Wheel - Danny Gokey Human Nature-Matt Giraud

You've been so generous and gracious already with the 3 choices for Adam Lambert.....But, But.... What about "If I Can't Have You?' (Remember Paula crying?) Or Whole Lotta Love? Or "Feeling Good" where he ecipsed Michael Bubble? Sigh....AI should be renamed Adam Idol!

How can you not have Adam Lambert's Want a Whole Lotta of Love or Cryin on this...know he is in there three times...but those performances were amazing...better than some you have listed...
