Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson died in a plane crash 51 years ago today, in a day that has been called "The Day the Music Died."
Holly, Valens and The Big Bopper were all enjoying big career success at the time of the crash. At the time of their deaths, the three were enjoying chart success as contemporary artists and appearing regularly on shows such as American Bandstand.
Their lives have been immortalized on the Hollywood big screen, including the critically acclaimed movie, "La Bamba," which focused on the rise and tragic end of Valens.
Don McLean wrote "American Pie," as a tribute to the three singers and Madonna covered the song in the late 1990s as well. With thick, black-rimmed glasses, and songs such as "Peggy Sue," and "That'll Be The Day," Holly was the biggest star of the three at the time.
