Adam Lambert Slams Susan Boyle - Whose Cover Song is Worse?

Feb. 24, 2010

By Joshua Molina, HispanicBusiness.com

American Idol Adam Lambert slammed Susan Boyle's album in a British magazine. He said he "laughed" at Boyle's song "Wild Horses," and called her debut album "terrible."

"I'm happy for her success, but that album is terrible," Adam Lambert told the magazine. (The Rolling Stones')'Wild Horses' is the one that made me laugh the hardest. I just died when I heard it. I was crying with laughter. It was the most horrendous, sacrilegious treatment of that song!"

Bold words for a guy whose self-indulgent, whiny rendition of "Ring of Fire," by Johnny Cash on a live American Idol nearly got him booted from the show. Even Simon Cowell, who became one of Lambert's biggest cheerleaders, called the unusual performance "Rubbish."

Which cover is worse? You make the call.

Lambert: Ring of Fire.
Boyle: Wild Horses.

I think Joshua is a little mad to Adam, and some people too, but his comment is not that crime. Maybe it wasn´t PC, but all people I know has said terrible opinions about other persons and nobody has died for that. And yes, the SuBo cover is pathetic, and Ring of fire become very sexy, in fact, only Simon said he didn't like it, and now Joshua and his indignation bring his words to punish Adam. Didn't you ever say something like that? Please, nobody is free of a guilty like this, and Adam is just a human being.

I loved Adam Lambert until this comment he made about Susan Boyle. Yes, I think that the CD could have been produced better...more variety in the songs. But what is this laughing comment? The comment was mean..just mean. Get over yourself Adam...before long people might be laughing at you.

There appears to be a generational divide in opinions. I guess younger readers are drawn to Adam Lambert while older readers are drawn to Susan Boyle. I do think that the comparison between the Ring of Fire cover and the Wild Horses cover is valid. Both singers put their personality into the song. I wouldn't expect that Adam would sing like Johnny Cash nor would I expect Susan to do it like The Stones. There are other singers who have done the same. Madonna covered Don Mclean's American Pie in a dance remix, for example. Which is better or worse is strictly a matter of taste. NOTE TO LINDA39: sending something 4 times doesn't make it sound more intelligent. I am guessing you are not open minded to other opinions.

Deb1974.......if he's the sexiest man on the planet, we women are in a lot of trouble. He shouldn't have said what he did, that made him look shallow. He keeps putting his foot in his mouth, it's as if he's trying to self-distruct.

Lamberts was a performance with a week prep, and Boyle was on a album. There a big time difference.

This is not an impressive article, poorly written, and not competently researched. I expect better from Hispanic News. I am sure that Adam respects Susan, and whatever he said was, without a doubt, taken out of context. Adam is a very kind and supportive person. Since we have never seen him be disrespectful, why would we conclude he is being disrespectful now? These kinds of articles are just to get clicks on your website, but do not add to the human discourse in any substantive way. Adam is awesome.

I Love Adam Lambert, his voice is amazing, he is one of the great singers of this current generation. He is entitle to his opinions and was taken out of context. I personally do not get the whole Susan Boyle thing, sure she has a good voice but so do alot of other people who are on stage every day. Good Luck to both Artists, but there really is no comparison, Adam is a Rock God.

Adam's cover of Ring of Fire is great, exciting and interesting, having grown up listening to alot of Johnny Cash songs, and not liking the original version of Ring of Fire, I really appreciated Adam's cover. Adam Lambert made each and every song he performed on Idol better, one of the best singers on earth.

If he felt so compelled to express his dislike for her album, he could simply have said, "I didn't think it was any good", or "I'm not a fan", or some such. The fact that he gleefully leapt to meanness and mockery shows he has no class or grace. Also, Johnny Cash himself had albums of covers that included songs by Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode, Will Oldham, Nick Cave and Soundgarden. I wonder if Lambert would make the same statement about Mr. Cash's country treatment of rock songs. He is a snide, hypocritical hack.

The musical merits of each cover song aside, this is an extremely lazy comparison. Susan Boyle released "Wild Horses" as her first single from her debut album, marking it as a song that should define her as an artist. Adam Lambert performed "Ring of Fire" during a country music theme week on American Idol. The two situations have nothing to do with each other. I would greatly enjoy Mr. Molina's explanation of how his own personal distaste for one of Lambert's performances invalidates Lambert from ever having a negative opinion on another artist's work. Perhaps Mr. Molina should work on toning down his embarrassing obsession with Lambert, as whenever Lambert does something Mr. Molina does not entirely approve of, it throws off Mr. Molina's ability to write a coherent article.

Susan Boyle is amazing, and her cover of "WIld Horses" is haunting & beautiful. Everyone has different taste in muisc, as a singer, Adam should not laugh at others. That is just too childish, espcially that came from someone who looks like a greeen monster.

The guy is under so much scrutiny! His is misquoted, hated for his sexuality, and banned from some tv stations. All of this negativity and he holds his temper and is accepting of all. So, if he makes one comment that is not acceptable, hang him from the highest tree. Patient, talented, honest, and remarkable is what Adam is on the inside. I guess he must walk on water because we expect him to take many a "tongue thrashing" and to curl up and go away. Guess what- Adam is here to stay eventhough he is often misquoted. Forget the negativity, I imagine that SB doesn't even think about the comments because she was bashed for her looks before she became famous for singing.

Adam Lambert didn't slam Susan Boyle. The UK magazine took his words out of context and misquoted him. He likes the Rolling Stones' original version of "Wild Horses" because he is obviously into classic rock and roll. That does not make him a bad guy. He said he was happy for Susan's success. His words were misquoted and out of context of what he originally said. There is no contest here. I would pick Ring of Fire because at that precise moment that he sang that on American Idol I knew we had someone that was going to bring excitement to the show and he did just that!

From what I've seen in the past, you have always been very fair to Adam Lambert. He is saying he was misquoted. You should probably find out the real story before you post one from a British tabloid, that may not even be correct. And by the way, I liked Adam throughout Idol, but the Ring of Fire performance was a defining moment where I knew he would one day be a star. It is the first song of his I purchased, and was brilliantly sung and performed. Whether you are a fan of Susan's or not, listen to the original version of the Stone's Wild Horses. It's an emotional, soulful, rock song. Susan has a fairytale story that appeals to many, but she took that song to a very unusual place shall we say.

Hmmm, I wouldn't be so quick to judge Lambert on this, as he has tweeted that the magazine has taken his words out of context. Knowing how sweet he normally is gives me reason to doubt that what the mag says is totally on the up and up. That said, I will point out that Lambert did not put ROF out as one of his RCA label tracts. It was sung during the Idol competition and included on his Season 8 favorite performances download. Okay, and having said that, guess which song I have listened to numerous times? It ain't no 'Wild Horses", thank you very much, a song that Boyles sings both beautifully but boringly to someone who is spoiled by Lambert's ring of fire and passion.

Really? Slams Susan Boyle? If you saw the whole interview, that is an EXTREME exaggeration. He did state the song made him laugh. Wild Horses by Susan Boyle is awful. Kind of like Brittany Spears doing Satisfaction. AWFUL! Ring of Fire was genius! Original/great vocals. Like it or hate it, he did what Simon ALWAYS says..make it original. Adam ROCKS!

Susan's is the worst of course. Adam Lambert is a star..and he didnt say things as they been quoted. GEEZ.. The man is nothing like any star we've ever known..sweet, gratious and always promoting others. Susan might be good..but not just my style..ADAM is HOT

Well first let me say I felt, as many others, that "Ring of Fire" was a defining moment for Adam and set him apart from the other contestants. I like to call it his "Jim Morrison Moment". I've even got a T-Shirt commending his country night rendition of "Ring of Fire". I also sent the video to my non-Idol friends because it was so anti-American Idol and they all loved it! All the other judges just Love It, as far as Simon's comments, like Adam said, "Simon doesn't get it" I would of thought you could have chosen a better song to compare than "Ring of Fire" Although, I love Adams song "For Your Entertainment" I'm not sure it is the best on his album. I think it would have behooved Adam better to of just stated to the British reporter that Susan Boyle just isn’t my “cup of tea” :-)
