WASHINGTON, Nov. 17, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The 2010 VIDA (Vision, Innovation, Dedication, and Advocacy) Awards were presented this evening by the National Alliance for Hispanic Health. This year the Alliance honored His Excellency Arturo Sarukhan, Ambassador of Mexico to the United States; Congresswoman Linda T. Sanchez of California; Ambassador Margaret M. Heckler, former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services; and Esther Sciammarella, M.S., Executive Director, Chicago Hispanic Health Coalition.
"The VIDA Awards put the spotlight on the exceptional work of individuals who do so much to impact on the health of Hispanics and all Americans," said Dr. Jane L. Delgado, President and CEO of the National Alliance for Hispanic Health.
This year's VIDA Awards celebrates the 25th anniversary of the landmark Report of the Secretary's Task Force on Black and Minority Health and the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services who issued the report, the US Ambassador of Mexico to the U.S. for his passionate advocacy for bi-national health collaboration, a Congresswoman leading the charge to end bullying in schools and putting her own life experience as a caregiver into Alzheimer's legislation, and the leader of the Chicago Hispanic Health Coalition for her decades of work in community health services and advocacy.
The awards were presented by the following leaders: Governor Bill Richardson of New Mexico; Adam H. Schechter, Executive Vice President and President, Global Human Health, Merck & Co., Inc.; Dr. Mirta Roses Periago, Director, Pan American Health Organization (PAHO); and, Dr. Jane Delgado of the Alliance.
The VIDA (Vision, Innovation, Dedication, and Advocacy) National Hispanic Health Leadership Award honors excellence and is the most prestigious award in the field of Hispanic health. The awards are given annually to recognize those who have done much to secure the promise of health and prosperity for America's Hispanic communities and the best health outcomes for all. The VIDA awards event is a time for Hispanic communities to honor these individuals and re-dedication to the mission ahead.
