Bret Hart returns to a WWE ring tonight after a 13-year absence. Hart, Canada's most famous professional wrestler, left the WWE on bad terms in 1997 after Vince McMahon in real life changed the ending of a match on live TV without telling him, causing him to lose his title in Montreal.
Captured in a tremendous documentary called "Wrestling with Shadows," Hart was outraged that the referee rang the bell early at the order of McMahon. The referee, Earl Hebner, claimed Hart had submitted to HBK Shawn Michaels, when he had not. Hart subsequently destroyed the WWE's camera equipment, spit in McMahon's face, before punching McMahon (breaking his hand in the process), backstage. The match was supposed to end on a disqualification, allowing Hart to keep his championship title.
Shamed in front of his Canadian fans, Hart vowed never to return to the WWE ring. He spent the next several years in WCW, the WWE's then company rival, before retiring from a series of concussion.
Now, in what has become arguably the biggest WWE storyline in more than a decade, Hart returns, and is expected to face McMahon at WrestleMania 27 in Glendale, Arizona in March.
Hart's return comes on the same day that legendary Hulk Hogan debuts on TNA - the WWE's current wrestling rival - for a special three-hour show.
Both shows are expected to record ratings for both USA and Spike TV.
