David Letterman won a minor victory in court today, when a judge refused to throw out a grand larceny case accusing CBS producer Robert "Joe" Halderman of trying to blackmail the comedian.
Letterman says Halderman threatened to sell a script detailing Letterman's affairs with "Late Show" staffers unless Letterman paid him $2 million.
The case dates back to a weird media firestorm in early October, when Letterman used his show to come clean about the affairs -- and publicly accuse Halderman of extortion.
Halderman, 52, is arguing through lawyers that the business transaction was fair and square, according to the Huffington Post.
The producer's attorney, Gerald Shargel, says such stories are "routinely suppressed through private business arrangement," and argued that the case didn't merit a trial.
On the last point, Manhattan state Supreme Court Justice Charles Solomon disagreed.
