With Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre tearing up the field at age 40, it's hardly surprising that some die-hard fan would not only take the time to put together a commemorative Web site, but also have the foresight to land the valuable URL "BrettFavre.com."
The weird part is this: The fan seems to be in complete denial that Favre, who quarterbacked the Green Bay Packers for 16 years, is now a member of the team's arch rival: The Minnesota Vikings.
But maybe it's not so strange. After all, this is a city that loved Favre like a founding father. Or maybe like a father, period. In 2008, Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt proposed re-naming the city's main thoroughfare "Brett Favre Boulevard," even though Green Bay already has a "Brett Favre Pass."
Love and hate are similar emotions, though, and when Favre came out of retirement (for the second time) to play for the hated Vikings last year following a so-so season with the New York Jets, Wisconsin Cheeseheads went sour as a jilted lover. To retaliate, Mayor Schmitt used what seems to be his favorite tool in the box: re-naming a street. When the Vikings came to play Green Bay in November, Minnesota Avenue was temporarily re-named Aaron Rodgers Avenue, after the Packers' new quarterback..
Schmitt and his staff also wore flip-flops for a day, to poke fun at Favre's indecision over whether to retire, and held an event that offered people waffle fries.
Of course, the ultimate revenge would have been a victory on Lambeau Field, but alas, that did not come to pass. Vikings beat the Packers 38-26.
Against this backdrop, the bizarre BrettFavre.com makes a little more sense. Note the banner at the top of the page. Surely it's no coincidence that it features Favre keeping a hapless Viking at bay with a stiff-arm. Go to the site's biography of Favre, and you'd think time stopped in 2007 -- the last year he played in Green Bay. And that's not because the site is dated: BrettFavre.com includes articles from as late as mid-December.
Meanwhile, Favre's arm might be dead-on, but he appears to have fumbled the opportunity to secure the Web domain rights to his own name. Then again, maybe he just has bigger pigs to skin. In any case, the URL to his "official" site is, by comparison, a clunker: "OfficialBrettFavre.com."
Of course, here, the major color themes are purple and yellow.
By way of comparison, here are the official Web sites of some other athletes you may have heard of: TigerWoods.com, TomBrady.com, KobeBryant.com and PeytonManning.com, to name a few.
