New Meme Hits Facebook, 'No One Should Die Because They Cannot Afford Health Care'

No One Should Die Because They Cannot Afford Health Care

Can simply posting a Facebook status update -- and encouraging all your online followers to do the same -- influence policy decisions? We may shortly find out.

A "meme" has been spreading like wildfire across Facebook, the social media site that boasts millions of users (a reported 87.7 million unique users in July). The core message, which some individuals are tweaking slightly, says:

"No one should die because they cannot afford health care, and no one should go broke because they get sick. If you agree, join us in posting this as your status for the rest of the day."

And many, many people are. You can see the tip of the iceberg by clicking here for a Facebook search that will bring up status updates of those invoking the meme.

What real-life results can this grassroots meme have? There's no official document being signed, and no real discernible way to track actual numbers of Facebook users joining in. Perhaps media attention to the healthcare issue is the goal (and, if so, we've done our part in proving pliable).

It is morally acceptable to allow one's neighbors to die because they cannot afford medical care, and it is morally acceptable to allow one's neighbors to go broke because they get sick. If you agree, please post this as your status for as long as you like. Health care is NOT and should NOT be a right or an entitlement!
