Fox TV will air a documentary next week about "Octomom" Nadya Suleman, the mother of 14 children whose use of fertility drugs left the world shocked, appalled and intrigued for months this year.
The two-hour "Octomom: The Incredible Unseen Footage" airs Aug. 19. It features material gathered by a company that had exclusive filming rights for seven months, starting with the birth of the octuplets in January, according to ABC News.
Mike Darnell, Fox's head of alternative programming, called the footage "surreal."
"The access they got is amazing," he told the LA Times. "They basically lived with her for seven months."
The announcement also has raised a few eyebrows.
The footage was shot by pop culture Web site RadarOnline, which was cited four times by the state of California for violating rules on filming children.
"You tell me how these kids are not being exploited by every dollar that changes hands on this TV special -- whether it is Fox, the broker who made the deal, the production company that violated California labor laws, or Suleman herself," writes Baltimore Sun critic David Zurawik.
However, Fox will devote a six-figure set-aside to the children, "even though it has no obligation to do so," said Mike Darnell, Fox's head of alternative programming, according to ABC.
The documentary is unrelated to a British reality TV show that will begin filming Suleman's life on Sept. 1.
