L.A. Times Columnist: Baseball Hall of Fame Shouldn't Pass Up Hispanic Greats Over Steroids

A disproportionate share of major league baseball players busted for using steroids are Hispanic.

But L.A. Times columnist Zev Chafets says some of those players -- such as Sammy Sosa, Alex Rodriguez and Manny Ramirez -- should nonetheless be allowed into the Hall of Fame.

A failure to admit them, he adds, would be for the league to carry on an unfortunate tradition of discriminating against Hispanic players.

"Is it cheating?" he writes. "Well, baseball cheating is as old as Babe Ruth's corked bat and as winked-at as Gaylord Perry's spitball. Ruth and Perry are in the Hall of Fame, part of a vast roster of immortals who used stimulants, downers and booze to help them perform, heal and get through the stress of major league competition."
