Soccer and singing celebrities Brandi Chastain and Julio Iglesias Jr. are teaming up to compete in the ABC reality show "The Superstars," a six-episode athletic competition premiering today, June 23, at 8 p.m. (7 p.m. Central).
The show is based on ABC's classic 1970s "The Superstars," which aired as part of "Wide World of Sports" and pitted competitors from a variety of sports against each other to determine the world's best athlete.
In "The Superstars," eight celebrities are paired with professional athletes to compete in sporting events. The six episodes were filmed at the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas.
Olympic gold medalist Chastain and Iglesias, the only Hispanic celebrity in the competition, will face a number of sports challenges during the series. In addition to being in top physical shape, they will need to develop the chemistry that is key to working effectively as a team.
Each week a team will be eliminated until one is left standing and crowned the winner. The competitors' athleticism and strategic thinking will be tested in such events as swimming, biking, running and kayaking.
Besides the Iglesias-Chastain team, the competing pro-celeb pairs are:
Terrell Owens and Joanna Krupa
Jeff Kent and Ali Landry
Robert Horry and Estella Warren
Bode Miller and Paige Hemmis
Kristi Leskinen and Maksim Chmerkovskiy
Lisa Leslie and Dan Cortese
Jennifer Capriati and David Charvet
Model-singer-dancer-soap actor Iglesias, 36, comes from a family of singing Spanish heartthrobs. There's dad Julio ("All the Girls I've Loved Before" and other love songs) and brother Enrique ("Bailamos").
Born in Madrid, Spain, Iglesias was raised in Miami, but has returned to his birthplace. He has modeled for Versace and recorded albums in English and Spanish ("Tercera Dimension"). He took part in Spain's version of "Dancing With the Stars," "Mira Quien Baila" ("Look Who's Dancing"), one of the most watched programs in Spain.
In addition to all that exertion on "The Superstars," Iglesias will help to kick off "Batalla de las Americas" (Battle of the Americas), which will crown Latin America's best pop singer from a pool of 21 contestants from more than 20 countries. Iglesias will perform during the reality show's premiere on June 28. The show will run weekly, with a finale on Sept. 20. And in the fall, Iglesias will begin filming his first feature film, "Secrets Kept," an independent movie that will be shot on location in Miami.
