Former Major League Baseball Player Sammy Sosa, whose home-run rivalry with Mark McGwire in 1998 is generally credited with helping the league overcome its strike-spawned doldrums, reportedly tested positive for performance-enhancing substances in 2003.

The New York Times reported today that lawyers familiar with the 2003 drug-testing results revealed under the condition of anonymity that Sosa was on the list of 104 players who tested positive. At that time, Sosa was with the Chicago Cubs, the team played with for more than a dozen seasons. His inclusion on the list of enhancement-using players flies in the face of testimony that Sosa gave to the U.S. Congress in 2005. The N.Y. Time's sources could not identify the specific substance that Sosa tested positive for.

If true, this does not represent the only instance of rule bending on Sosa's part. He was famously caught using a corked bat during a game against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 2003.

Sosa last played on Sept. 29, 2007 for the Texas Rangers.
