Father Alberto Cutie Joins Episcopal Church, Allowing Once-Forbidden Relationship

May 28, 2009

In the latest news in the Father Alberto Cutie saga, the Catholic priest who admitted to having an affair and breaking his celibacy vows is joining the Episcopal Church so that he can be with the woman he loves, CNN reported. Unlike the Catholic Church, the Episcopal denomination allows its priests to marry.

In a written statement, the Episcopal Diocese of Southeast Florida said Cutie plans to enter the priesthood in the Episcopal Church, CNN said.

The priest had been removed from his Miami Beach church after photographs of him in romantic embraces with a woman appeared in a Spanish-language magazine earlier this month. The woman has not been publicly named.

The Miami Herald reports that Thursday afternoon, there was a small, private ceremony at Trinity Cathedral in downtown Miami, the Episcopal Church's South Florida headquarters, in which Cutie was received into the church. Bishop Leo Frade, leader of the Episcopal Diocese of Southeast Florida, officiated, the newspaper reported. The ceremony is the first step toward Cutie becoming an Episcopal priest.

The Herald published a statement by Cutie that said: "I thank God for the many people in our community who have shown me their love and support. Your prayers have sustained me at this time of transition in my life. With God's help, I hope to continue priestly ministry and service in my new spiritual home."

What is the history of such moves? It sounds like more of a corporate thing than anything else, as if a popular employee has accepted an offer from a competing firm. It certainly puts the spotlight on the Catholic Church and its insistence on celibacy. And it calls into question whether God has anything to do with all this at all. Does God really care which church a minister belongs to? Certainly, the Catholic Church sees this question as a big deal. Bravo, Father Cutie, I say. I feel that he must have all the blessings of God in his choice of actions. But I'd expect few, if any, in the Catholic hierarcy to have anything positive to say about this. The hardliners are certainly in charge of things these days, where neither dissent nor "bad press." is sought.

I'm Catholic (born & raised), I'm firm in my religious beliefs. At first, when the alarming news about Father Alberto, I decided not to pick sides nor criticized the fellow Catholic Priest. I saw it as, we are all human & make poor decisions at times. Despite of his calling - he made a commitment under God to serve in the Catholic church. I find it beyond appauling about his decision to enter into a different religious group in order to continue his romance. He could've left his duties as a Catholic priest & continued his 2 yr. + romance with this woman because he was going to do so, regardless if he didn't get busted. I find it sad that Priests like him give my religion a bad reputation. Catholics are free individuals, we have confessions + no matter religion or not, bounderies exist!
