SANTA BARBARA, Calif., April 12 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ -- The April issue of HispanicBusiness(R) Magazine features The Honorable Frances Garcia, Inspector General of the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) as the 2009 HispanicBusiness(R) Woman of the Year. Each year, HispanicBusiness Magazine honors a select group of Hispanic women who have made a national impact by demonstrating the highest levels of achievement in their professions.
Ms. Garcia joined the GAO in 1986. With trillions of dollars pouring into U.S. markets to turn around the world's largest economy, she oversees the audits and investigations of the GAO, which keeps tabs on how Congress is spending taxpayers' dollars. Prior to her current role as Inspector General, she was the Director of the Office of Recruitment, where she was responsible for all of GAO's nationwide recruitment.
Created in 1972, Ms. Garcia helped co-found the Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting (ALPFA). Her involvement led to her becoming the first female national president of the organization. This increased visibility led to an appointment by President Carter to a five-year term on the Copyright Royalty Tribunal, where she eventually became the chair. Ms. Garcia is a graduate of Midwestern State University in Texas, where she received the Distinguished Alumna Award.
