If you've been channel zapping lately on YouTube, you may have noticed a new one: Education. More than 100 institutions of higher learning, including Stanford University, MIT, Harvard and Yale, have partnered with the video-sharing site to offer everything from a campus tour to a classroom lecture.

On YouTube EDU, colleges and universities have posted videos that promote their schools and the tours can be helpful in making informed choices on where to apply.

The videos also include introductory classes, guest lecturers and even full semester's courses. At a time when there are many out of work and education costs are rising, this free education tool can be quite valuable.

Obadiah Greenberg, the strategic partnership manager for YouTube, told the Associated Press: "There's a huge appetite around the world for people to better themselves, to study subjects that they either never got a chance to or haven't studied in a while."

YouTube EDU offers an alternative to Apple's iTunes U, a free collection of educational media.
