Today, March 2, marks the twelfth annual Read Across America Day, in which every adult is encouraged to pick up a book and read to a child.
Sponsored by the National Education Association, RAAD also celebrates the birthday of famous children books' author, Dr. Seuss. Seuss, whose real name was Theodor Geisel, died of lung cancer at the age of 87 in 1991. He was praised for his colorful and imaginative books, as well as his use of rhyming, which educators say is a successful tool to help kids learn basic reading and writing skills.
Libraries, schools, and communities across the United States will be participating in this event, and the NEA advocates any able body to join in.
