Bigger really is better, according to Audi . . . at least when it comes to the new Audi A-4 sporty sedan.
The car is longer on an extended wheelbase. That produces a more comfortable ride (although bumps will still be felt.) Steering response is quicker and there's some lean on sharp curves.
A powerful 3.2L V-6 of 265 horsepower scoots the A-4 to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds via a six speed automatic transmission. The initial startup can be a bit abrupt.
Fuel economy is also bigger with a rating of 17 city and 26 highway. Four cylinder engines and front-wheel drive models are available with higher miles per gallon figures.
Still, zero to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds is not to be shunned.
Helping the secure handling is Audi's Quatro all-wheel drive system. There's electronic stability control and anti-lock braking, of course.
Audi has tweaked the chassis, improved ride and handling and massaged the V-6. All of that can be adjusted to suit motorists' whims.
The driving position is excellent on commodious and nicely bolstered seats. Side mirrors are of a good size.
The biggest challenge remains: the "MMI operating logic standard with central display screen." That's not a navigation screen, but a fiendishly clever device to hide the radio and other functions from use. Nothing is easy to select.
On the plus side there are two cup holders and two power outlets (for bringing your own sound system?)
The A-4 is a sports sedan in the mode of the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C Class. Audi likes to point out the new A-4 is longer, wider and its wheelbase (the distance between front and back wheels) is greater than those two. So there.
