The Republican Party is losing more and more of its Hispanic members, and experts say anti-immigration rhetoric is a largely to blame, according to the Dallas Morning News.
The paper reported that the urban centers that have witnessed the largest influx of Hispanic residents – Dallas, Harris County and Travis County – have also shown a sharp rise in the number of Democrats elected to municipal offices.
The trend also appears to be accelerating in the Southwest and in Florida, normally a Republican stronghold, which went Democrat in the latest election.
Leading Hispanic Republicans such as a top adviser to Sen. John McCain say members of the party must tone down the anti-immigration rhetoric if they want to turn the tide.
