The U.S. government will start using Predator drones -- the same unmanned aircraft used for military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq -- to monitor the Mexican border for illegal immigrants trying to cross into California.
Controlled by a two-person team on the ground in San Diego, the unarmed drones also will scour the area for drug and human smugglers, according to the LA Times.
Using radar and long-range video cameras, the drones will be unveiled today in the California desert by the Department of Defense contractor General Atomics.
The company will transmit information to U.S. authorities.
Similar drones are already is use at the Mexican border of Arizona and Texas, as well as between Canada and North Dakota.

If you really want the drones to be effective, then ARM them and use them against the drug smugglers. Watch business drop like a rock after the 3 or 4 hits.
