Dennis Miller and the WWE Slammy Awards: An Unlikely Match

Dec. 14, 2009

Rob Kuznia -- HispanicBusiness.com

After a two-year stint as a color commentator for the NFL, comedian Dennis Miller was sacked because his cultural reference-laden jokes were often lost on the audience.

Tonight, Miller will try his hand with professional wrestling, as the host of the WWE Slammy Awards -- pro wrestling's version of the "Grammy Awards" -- on Monday Night Raw.

Will he pass muster with the WWE's young fan base? Or will they want to give him the flying clothesline?

Only time will tell.

In the meantime, here are a few of his better-known cracks as a Monday Night Football commentator, as posted on Sports Business Daily. For some of the more obscure references, we've provided a Dennis Miller Translator.

August 20, 2001 -- On the NFL using replacement refs: "I'm a little worried about the caliber of the replacement refs. I saw Ian Woosnam's caddy's name on the list."

Translation: The pro golfer that summer was disqualified from the British Open after his caddy accidentally stocked his bag with 15 clubs -- one more than the permitted 14.

August 6, 2001 -- On the XFL: "People were calling NBC asking them to run the movie 'Heidi.'"

Translation: In 1968, fans were furious when a televised nail-biter between the New York Jets and the Oakland Raiders -- with just 1 minute remaining -- was interrupted by the airing of the movie "Heidi." But the XFL was so bad that ... well, you can probably take it from here.

October 15, 2001 -- During a game between the winless Redskins and the winless Cowboys, co-host Al Michaels refered to a 1987 Redskins-Cowboys Monday Night Football match, saying, "That one topped this." Miller: "Keanu Reeves had a nice game that night."

Translation: OK, so that one went over our heads.

In fairness to Miller, not all of his jokes require translation.

On Native Americans protesting the Redskins nickname: "Things have gotten so bad in [Dallas] this year, as I entered the stadium tonight, I saw a picket line of guys in ten-gallon hats and spurs protesting Dallas' use of the nickname the Cowboys."

Tonight's Slammy Awards will air at 8 p.m. ET (7 p.m. CT) on USA Network from the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas.

The host referred to a "replacement game" during the 1987 players strike. Keanu Reeves played in a movie about the replacement players used during the strike.
